Start making New Year Resolutions now

Resolutions are usually made at the beginning of a year.

You know the drill—you pledge to spend less on Starbucks, exercise more, and call old friends more frequently.

For the first few weeks, you amaze yourself by the discipline shown; however, as the months go by, you may find that you start to slack off.

You sleep in a little later, tell yourself that a cup of Starbucks won’t break the budget, and don’t call as often, because your friends, after all, lead busy lives too. It’s amazing how we talk ourselves into–and out of—lifestyle changes.

We are all well-intentioned at some point, just perhaps not for the long-term.

I thought it might be worthwhile to urge that the resolution process start now, rather than 30 days from now.


Well, mainly because as the days go by, there will be many diversions, all good, but diversions nonetheless.

What is it you want to accomplish? Why do you want to do it? Do you have a plan? Do you have what it takes to make it happen?

These are questions that only you can answer.

Businesses call resolutions by another name: goals. They are one and the same, synonyms if you will. Goals are things to be done. They imply that actions will be taken, with the expected outcome that the goals will become reality.

Staying relevant requires action. A business can only succeed if it makes forward progress. Unlike football, where a team gets four tries to gain a first down, businesses get maybe one or two opportunities.

If you are not only going to stay in the game, but win, a business needs to take action. This, in turn, requires that the owners and stakeholders be bold, courageous, and smart.

Stay relevant and grow.
